Afterglow Plumbing & Heating Limited is a family run firm of plumbers and Gas Safe registered heating engineers based in Sheldon, Birmingham. Vic Mullan launched the business in 2009 after years of apprentice work and national utility service, and now runs it as a family team with his son being trained to continue it.

The business is Gas Safe registered under number 501031 and fully insured. Boiler work is its specialism: new boiler installations, servicing, repairs and upgrades, with Worcester Bosch among the brands it works with. Beyond boilers it handles central heating, plumbing installation and repair, bathroom fitting, and same day emergency call outs for leaks, loss of heating and urgent boiler faults.

Three things about how the firm operates are worth knowing. The first is the arrival call: customers get a courtesy warning around 45 minutes before the engineer reaches them, which is the difference between waiting in all morning and getting on with your day. The second is the pricing. Every quote is broken down and itemised so a customer can see exactly where the money is going, which the firm describes as a level of honesty that a local family run business is in a position to offer. The third is the guarantee: all work is covered for twelve months, and payment can be made by card or cash with receipts provided.

The strongest evidence for the quality of the work is where the work comes from. The company reports that 78 per cent of its jobs come from repeat customers or word of mouth, which for a trade business is the figure that matters most. Customers who would not use a firm again do not recommend it to their neighbours.

Being based in Sheldon, the team lives and works in the area it serves, covering Birmingham and Solihull including Kings Heath, Moseley, Hall Green, Yardley, Edgbaston and Harborne. The firm also runs seasonal offers on equipment such as magnetic system filters, which catch the sludge circulating in a heating system before it reaches the boiler and blocks the narrow waterways in a modern heat exchanger. Preventing that is considerably cheaper than repairing the damage it causes.

Whether the job is a boiler that has stopped on a cold morning, a planned replacement, an annual service or a bathroom being fitted, the approach is the same: turn up when promised, price it openly, and stand behind the work afterwards.
